QUEEN ELIZABETH HITS MILESTONE

Britain's Queen Elizabeth II became
the country's oldest reigning monarch
when she surpassed the record set by
her great-great grandmother Queen
Victoria. Victoria lived 81 years and
243 days, and Elizabeth surpassed that
record. However, the longest-serving
monarch record still belonged to Queen
Victoria, who reigned for nearly 64
years. Queen Elizabeth has served for
55 years since her coronation in 1952.

FAREWELL, LADY BIRD

The world said goodbye to Claudia Alta
Taylor, a.k.a. Lady Bird Johnson, at the age
of 94 Lady Bird was known for her role
as the quintessential political wife. She
campaigned tirelessly alongside her
husband and even used her inheritance
funds to assist with his bid for political
office. After Lyndon Baines Johnson
became the nation's 36th president.
Lady Bird worked as an advocate for
the beautification of America and the
Head Start program.

SALES SLUMP

The housing market continued to battle
tough times when sales by homeowners
hit a record low in October. Economists
pointed to the excess supply of homes
on the market and adjustable rate
mortgages as reasons for the slump.
In December, President George W. Bush
and policy makers responded by cutting
the federal funds rate for the third time
that year.

ROVE RESIGNS

President Bush's long-time political
adviser announced his resignation and
left the White House in August 2007.
Karl Rove was the latest in a string of
administration resignations following
the Democratic takeover in Congress.
Rove's departure from the White House
came as a result of Chief of Staff Josh
Bolten's request for staffers to resign
before Labor Day or commit to serving
through the end of Bush's term.

SANCTIONS FOR SECURITY

According to Iranian President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad, Iran's nuclear weapon
development was a closed issue. However,
despite repeated demands from the U.N.
Security Council, Iran did not suspend
enrichment of uranium. The council responded
by imposing increased sanctions on Tehran
for its refusal to comply. Iran maintained that
its nuclear program was aimed only toward
generating electricity.

U.N. TROOPS TO AID DARFUR

The United Nations Security Council
authorized calling up to 26,000 troops and
police to supplement the 7,000 African
Union force in Sudan's Darfur region.
The combined United Nations-African
Union operation aimed to help solve
over four years of conflict in Darfur.
More than 200,000 people have been
killed and 2.5 million have been displaced
due to the unrest and fighting in the area.

LEAD SCARE RAISES CONCERN

Chinese products fell under scrutiny after
potentially dangerous levels of chemicals
and toxins were found in a variety of
products, ranging from pet food to
children's toys. Mattel was forced to
recall millions of toys made in China;
other products under investigation
included shrimp, commercial steel,
lipstick, and Boy Scout badges.
Ultimately, American companies were
held responsible for the quality of
their products in the marketplace, but
monitoring quality was an enormous
task due to the prevalence of Chinese
products in the United States.

TRAGEDY IN MINNESOTA

On August 1, 2007, the unthinkable
happened in Minneapolis when the
Interstate 35W bridge collapsed during
rush hour. The 1,907-foot bridge fell into
the Mississippi River and onto roadways
below in less than 4 seconds. As a result,
there were 145 injured and 13 lives lost.
The National Transportation Safety
Board (NTSB) released its first report in
December, revealing that a design error
resulted in undersized gusset plates for
the truss bridge, which was first opened
in 1967. The bridge collapse prompted an
increased number of safety inspections
for bridges nationwide.

BHUTTO ASSASSINATED

Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto
was assassinated after a campaign rally.
Bhutto's assassination occurred just
weeks before the country was to hold a
parliamentary election in which she was
hoping to win a third term of leadership.
Bhutto, who led Pakistan from 1988 to
1990 and again from 1993 to 1996, was
the first female prime minister of any
Islamic state. Bhutto had been the target
of several assassination attempts by
Al Qaeda, the Taliban and Pakistani
jihad groups.

DEMOCRACY DEFENDER DIES

Boris Yeltsin will be remembered as the
man who brought democratic reform
to Russia by ending over 70 years of
Soviet Communism. The former Russian
President died on April 23, 2007, of heart
failure at the age of 76. Yeltsin won
international acclaim when he stood
on top of a tank in Moscow during a

Mikhail Gorbachev.

THE LONG RACE

The 2008 presidential campaign made
headlines before a final candidate was
even selected. The race for the presidency
was already in full swing as of early 2007,
which made it the longest election race in
history. A variety of candidates made their
bids for the White House, as Americans
waited to hit the polls on November 4.

President George W. Bush signed an
energy bill that updated automotive fuel
economy standards for the first time in
more than three decades. The new law
required a corporate average of 35 miles
per gallon (mpgl by the year 2020. It also
boosted federal support for alternative

TOP AUTOMAKER POSTS LOSS

General Motors Corp. reported one of
the largest losses ever for an automotive
company GM lost $38 7 billion in 2007,
despite record revenues from its
automotive business due to growth in
emerging markets and favorable
exchange rates. The automaker's large
loss was the result of a third-quarter
charge related to unused tax credits. GM
narrowly held onto its title as the world's
largest automaker; in 2007 it sold just 3,000
more vehicles than Toyota Motor Corp.

DOLLAR DIPS

The U.S. dollar hit a record low against
the euro in November 2007. The outgoing
manager of the International Monetary
Fund cautioned that an abrupt fall could
trigger a loss of confidence in U.S. dollar
assets throughout the global market.
As rumors of a U.S. recession circulated,
investors kept a watchful eye on
markets worldwide.

TOXIC TRAILERS

U S. Health officials advised the removal
of Gulf Coast hurricane victims from
government-issue trailer homes due to
toxic formaldehyde levels within the
dwellings. Tests revealed fume
levels up to 40 times the customary
exposure. Indoor air temperature
was a significant factor in elevated
formaldehyde levels — the U.S. Center
for Disease Control and Prevention
rpcommended the relocation of
residents before summer.

For the first time in a decade, a minimum
wage increase was announced. Over
a period of two years, the minimum wage
increased from the previous minimum
of $5.15 an hour to $7.25 an hour in 2009.
The bill included $4.84 billion in tax
breaks for small businesses to provide
support for the wage increase. As of
late 2007, the Economic Policy Institute
estimated that 4 percent of the work

ripped through the South and killed
at least 57 people in several states,
including Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky
and Tennessee. The rare winter storm,
which spawned destructive twisters,
was one of the deadliest in history for
the month of February. As the extent
of the lives lost and massive damage
became clear, presidential candidates
paid their respects to the victims.

MISSILE TARGETS SPY SATELLITE

In an unprecedented mission for the U.S.
Navy, a missile was launched in February
2008 to intercept and destroy a disabled
spy satellite. The satellite weighed about
5,000 pounds and was nearly the size of
a school bus. Pentagon officials were
concerned about the health hazards
posed to humans if the satellite crashed
in a populated area. The missile collided
with the satellite at a combined speed
of over 17,000 miles per hour 130 miles

FATAL SUPERBUG

As of 2007, more than 90,000 Americans
each year contracted potentially fatal
staph infections from a drug-resistant
"superbug " The bug was called
methicillin-resistant staphylococus,
or MRSA, and its bacteria was carried
by healthy people where it lived on their
skin or in their noses. It raised concerns
because it became more common and
it was resistant to penicillin. Without a
vaccine for the superbug, the number
of deaths caused by it each year could
surpass the number of fatalities caused
by the AIDS virus.

MONSTER OF THE DEEP

English scientists shared their discovery
of an 18-inch fossilized claw that was part
of an ancient sea monster. The "monster"
was believed to be an 8-foot-long sea
scorpion that lived 390 million years ago,
and it was the largest of its kind ever
found. The scorpions were dominant for
millions of years before larger fish stole
their reign of the deep seas.

PANDA POOP TO PAPER

Chinese researchers from the Chengdu
Giant Panda Breeding Base learned
how to transform a two-ton daily load
of panda waste into paper. The idea
originated during a visit to Thailand,
when they saw paper made from
elephant dung. The researchers thought
that their 40 bamboo-fed pandas, which
produce about two tons of waste per
day, could make an even finer paper.
Their next step was finding paper mills
to process their fiber-rich material into
high quality paper.

genetic recipes that give ordinary human
skin cells the power to turn into virtually
any kind of human tissue. With this
capability, a person's own skin cells

cells was still years away, but the
breakthrough was a "tremendous
scientific milestone."

Shell Oil and German biofuel company
Choren Industries planned the European
launch of a new road fuel called Sunfuel
for late 2007. This new fuel was made
from wood chips and straw, and its
program pilot for synthetic diesel was
expected to shift the industry. The
projected change involved using plant
material waste instead of valuable food
crops to create fuel. Sunfuel's cost was
more than the price of oil, but Shell
spokesmen expected the price to come
down as production volume increased.

that meat and milk from cloned cattie, pigs
and goats are safe to eat which made the
United States the first country to approve
cloned food for consumption. The agency
announced that it would not require food
from clones to be labeled in the marketplace
The FDA awaited the public response to its
news before moving forward; a 2006 survey
documented that 64 percent of Americans
are uncomfortable with animal cloning.
